"Gathering the Script" is a sculpture/installation piece for the invitational exhibition
Murmurations curated by Emily Lanctot for the DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, Michigan.
This piece is about gathering the memories of time spent at the
International Contemporary Arts Center In Monte Castello, Italy where about twenty artists gathered to do a residency and exhibition there in June of 2022.
As often with my work, one thing leads to another. My sculptures
and installations tend to have a more specific concept
Inspired or influenced by something that I have read or experienced.
With this memory of gathering at the residency, my references were to the
outdoor Cafe in the common square in the village which was a popular
hangout for the artists as well as the community.
Gathering the Script, reflects that environment with the found Bistro chair and the individual elements on the chair:
-A long gauze scarf that was digitally printed with the image from one of the
small paintings that I did while at the residency. (see campo from the Green Heart
Region of Umbria in Italy)
-A handmade cup and saucer mimicking a cappuccino using air dried clay
for the cup and a stack of handmade and found papers for the saucer.
A crumpled up napkin is a painting on handmade paper, the upper side is the color orange
and the underside is the color blue. This unseen side with the color blue referenced
The blue in a large poster in the center’s library of Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s painting
titled The Allegory of the Good and Bad Government.
